3D paper making and paper casting

Online workshop

First session: Monday, 4 December 2023
Second session: Monday, 18 December 2023

17:00-19.30 (Central European Time)

Welcome to The Paper Lab by Guy Lougashi, where we explore the art of creating three-dimensional paper reliefs and cast objects using paper as the primary material.

In this online workshop, we'll take a deep dive into the craft of 3D paper making and paper casting, exploring the limitless potential of this fascinating art form.

We'll delve into the intricacies of mold-making, learning various methods that can be used to create unique and interesting designs. You'll learn how to create molds that can be used repeatedly, allowing you to create multiple copies of your paper cast objects.

In addition to mold-making, we'll also delve into the process of making the perfect blend of paper material. We'll cover the optimal ratio of water to paper, and how to achieve the right consistency and texture for your paper. We'll experiment with different materials and additives, both natural and recycled, to create unique textures and finishes.

Our workshop consists of two sessions, each lasting 2,5 hours, and will include images for illustration, video demonstrations, and a workshop presentation.

We believe in the value of our workshops, which is why we encourage participants to practice with the relevant questions and issues they face when applying the techniques and methods learned during the first session. This way, you'll be better prepared to attend the second session, where we'll focus on refining your skills and developing your creativity further.

Our workshops are suitable for all levels and don't require special tools or machinery. They're perfect for people with a strong motivation for self-education. Join us in this exciting and rewarding experience of 3D paper making and paper casting. Lets unleash our creativity and explore the endless possibilities of this amazing medium.

The workshop is structured as follows: In the first session, we'll provide a theoretical introduction that explains the method. Next, we'll cover the principles and various options for making the mold. We'll then demonstrate how to prepare the paper pulp and pour it into the template, and discuss the application, casting, and drying processes. By the end of the session, you'll receive instructions to start working on your own. In the second session, we'll address any questions you may have about the content and cover additional techniques, such as how to remove the casting from the mold and how to paint or process the finished product. We'll also discuss other important points about the process in general.

To accommodate participants from both the United States and Europe, the workshop time was set to 5:00 PM Berlin time, which is 8:00 AM in Los Angeles and 11:00 AM in New York. We will use a WhatsApp group to stay connected and ensure the utmost precision.
